As longtime community members and volunteers, Peggy and Jim Price shaped many of the places and spaces we love in our community.
How long have you lived/worked in Newcastle and what brought you and Jim to live/work in Newcastle?
We met in Jim’s Outing Club. We both loved hiking, and Jim introduced me to skiing, canoeing, and sailing; and eventually travel. We moved to Alaska just after we were married. We returned to Washington then moved to Newcastle with our two children in January 1986. Jim died in 2018 on a solo hike near Skykomish.
What are some of the ways you and Jim have contributed to our community?
I served on the Newcastle Parks Commission and contributed to the City’s trail standards. I am active leader and trail builder for Newcastle Trails.
Jim was one of the residents who worked toward the City’s incorporation. Besides helping establish the City, Jim helped start the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce, Newcastle Trails, and was involved with the Historical Society and Newcastle Arts Council. He was a Community Activities Commissioner at the time of his passing.
Tell us a Newcastle memory.
There are so many! A sampling:
- After we’d had an abrupt snow in December, a thaw/refreeze created icy roads and driving was discouraged. Jim and I went cross-country skiing across Newcastle delivering Christmas cards to some friends.
- We manned the Newcastle Trails booth at Newcastle Days, answering questions about the trail system.
- I finished the Terrace Trail.
What do you hope for the future of Newcastle?
I hope Newcastle manages to complete an enjoyable network of trails so that people can get to know each other while helping reduce emissions. It’s nice to see familiar faces, and good for the physical and mental health to get exercise in fresh air in natural settings. I hope it also encourages residents to walk to our local businesses, who then provide the goods and services that make the City a pleasant and efficient place to live. I hope all kids get to experience volunteering so that they continue it and promote it as adults.
What is your idea of a perfect weekend in Newcastle?
Working on trails!
What are some of your favorite Newcastle places to visit?
I enjoy events at the library and in our parks. And, of course, walking the trails.
