Well done, Newcastle! At our Spring Recycling Collection Event, you recycled 39,712 pounds (or nearly 20 tons) of material earlier this month on April 6. That's an average of 150 pounds of material per vehicle!
Funding was provided by the Washington State Department of Ecology, the King County Solid Waste Division, the King County Hazardous Waste Management Program, and E-Cyle Washington.
Thank you for protecting the environment and keeping these recyclable materials out of landfills. Planning for our Fall 2024 Recycling Collection Event is already underway.
BY THE NUMBERS
- 18,880 pounds of appliances, scrap metal, and electronic equipment. The material will be sorted and recycled by various metal recyclers in the Seattle area.
- 2 used refrigerators and freezers. The ozone-depleting chemicals and gas will be removed from these units and disposed of properly by UpTekk Recycling in Auburn.
- 90 TV sets. The TVs will be processed and recycled by Metro Metals in Tacoma.
- 70 computer monitors. The monitors will be processed and recycled by Metro Metals.
- 25 cubic yards of Styrofoam. The material will be processed by Styro Recycle in Kent.
- 9,900 pounds of shredded paper. The materials were shredded on site by Confidential Data Disposal of Issaquah.
- 6 propane tanks. The tanks will be reused through a cylinder exchange service or will be recycled as scrap metal through various metal recyclers in the Seattle area.
- 38 used tires. The tires will be reused if in good condition, if not, chipped and made into such products as garden hoses, playground mats, road bedding, and burned as fuel.
- 6 lead acid batteries. The batteries will be dismantled, the acid disposed of properly, and the cores recycled into new batteries through All Battery.
- 3,320 household batteries. The batteries will be dismantled, the hazardous material disposed of properly through All Battery.
- 2 toilets and sinks. The porcelain material will be processed by Girard Resources and Recycling in Covington into concrete material.
- 14 mattresses and box springs. The mattresses and box springs were collected for recycling by Uptekk Recycling.
