The City has completed work in Hazelwood Park to restore healthy tree canopy. This work was initiated in 2019 based on a high incidence of hazard tree reports in recent years along with resident complaints regarding the condition of trees within the park. This effort consists of the following elements:

— Urban Forest Management Plan- Completed in September 2019.

— Hazard Tree Assessment - Completed in February 2020. This consisted of a Certified Arborist making recommendations to address the 94 hazard trees identified in the Urban Forest Management Plan. The action was either partial or complete removal of the tree. In some instances the tree was topped and left in place as a habitat snag.

— Invasive species removal - blackberry removal work completed in mid-August 2020.

— Hazard Tree Removal - completed in October 2020. It consisted of performing the recommended actions in the Hazard Tree Assessment.

— Planting of new trees - Completed in November 2020.  1,245 trees were installed.

All work listed above is being funded by the City's Tree Mitigation Fund, which consists of mitigation payments made by past developments that are unable to achieve the required tree preservation thresholds for their development projects.
