Recycling Collection Rates May Increase
Posted on 04/12/2018

Newcastle customers who subscribe to recycling services through Waste Management (WM) recently received a letter from the hauler outlining a proposed rate increase due to volatile market conditions in the recycling industry.

“The cost to process the recyclables that we collect has risen rapidly following an announced ban by China of many recyclable materials and new unachievable quality requirements by the overseas markets,” WM writes in the letter.

The waste hauler continues, “Due to the volatility and unpredictability of these impacts, rather than a permanent increase to recycling collection rates, we believe that a temporary surcharge is an appropriate mechanism for managing increased processing costs.”

WM has applied for an initial increase of $0.76/per month for recycling collection rates, subject to the review and approval of the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission. If approved, the surcharge would become effective on May 1, 2018. The rate adjustment is still pending with the WUTC.

The waste hauler stressed that the main reasons for the rate adjustment are an increase in processing costs, in an attempt to meet the new required quality levels in the recyclables, and the significant drop in recycling commodity prices.

Customers can do their part to mitigate these costs by making certain they are only recycling materials that are free from contamination, WM said. When in doubt, throw it out. Learn more about recycling here.
