Celebrate Earth Week in Newcastle
Posted on 04/16/2018

April 16 kicks off Earth Week and you’re invited to join the City of Newcastle as it celebrates the environment. This year’s Earth Week festivities include an Eco Fair, a special composting workshop and a chance for residents to take home a free tree to plant in your yard.

The slate of Earth Week activities kicks off on Tuesday, April 17 with the Eco Fair at Newcastle City Hall from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Geared toward kids ages 3-5, the Eco Fair features plenty of hands-on games and educational opportunities that will teach children about the environment and the importance of recycling. Representatives from Waste Management, the Coal Creek Family YMCA, the Newcastle Library and city staff will all be on hand offering games, arts and crafts, and free goodies.

The next day, head to the Newcastle Library for special Earth Week story times. Join your favorite librarians as they read stories about the Earth and environment on April 18. Infant story time starts at 10:15 a.m. and preschool story time begins at 11:30 a.m.

On Saturday, April 21, learn how to successfully plant and care for trees at the Tree Planting & Composting Workshop held at the Newcastle Library from 10:30 a.m. to noon. A master gardener from Newcastle Fruit & Produce will teach attendees about different types of trees, tree health and proper planting techniques. Waste Management will also share information about composting and offer some free supplies to get you started.

Newcastle residents who attend the workshop will receive a voucher to take home a free tree from Newcastle Fruit & Produce. The voucher utilizes money from the city’s dedicated tree mitigation fund.

Special thanks to the King Conservation District, Newcastle Library, Coal Creek YMCA, Waste Management and Newcastle Fruit & Produce.
