A Message from Chief Houck

It's getting to be that time of year again. No, I'm not talking about the return of pumpkin spice lattes at SBUX or the just-announced seasonal return of the McRib and McDonalds. I'm talking about the return of cold, rainy weather and shorter days. With that, NPD would like to ask for your help. Every year about this time we see a rise in accidents and car thefts. Accidents because, despite living in the PNW, we forget how to drive in the rain; then throw darkness in on top of that and it leads to accidents. Please remember that when it rains, the road is going to be slicker, and you should adjust your speed accordingly. Slow down. That extra five minutes it takes you to get somewhere is better than not getting there at all because you wrecked your car.

I also want people NOT to warm up their cars in their driveways. I won’t get into the environmental impact it has because I know people won’t agree with that, but what I bet people can agree on is that they don’t want their cars stolen. Just as we have asked people to take all of their things out of their cars at night so people won’t steal them, we don’t want people leaving their keys in their running cars either. Sadly, I know some will still do that, and while I hope I am wrong, I am willing to bet we will have reports of cars being stolen while doing just this. Please prove me wrong.
