Newcastle Announces Summer Events Schedule

Newcastle’s annual slate of summer events kicks off in July with the city’s annual Fourth on the Lake celebration.

Fireworks are banned in the City of Newcastle, but, as always, there is one place where residents can legally watch the pyrotechnic displays light up the night sky.

Celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, food and music at Lake Boren Park this Fourth of July. Arrive early and stake out your spot on the park lawn. Bring your own dinner or food vendors will be available starting at 6 p.m. Tastyz Kettle Corn and Frank’s Franks will be selling food at the event.

Soul Siren takes the stage at 8 p.m. The band plays everything from funk and soul to rock and top 40 dance favorites. The fireworks show begins when it gets dark at about 10 p.m.

“Fireworks are banned in the city. We’re asking people to respect the ban and come enjoy the Fourth at Lake Boren Park,” said Newcastle Community Activities Coordinator Wendy Kirchner.

Call the police non-emergency number (206-296-3311) to report illegal firework activity.

The city’s summer lineup continues with its four-part Concerts in the Park series. All concerts go from 7-8:30 p.m. at Lake Boren Park. Tastyz will be selling shaved ice and kettle corn and other food vendors could be announced prior to the first concert.

The first concert is July 18, when Massy Ferguson takes the stage. The band plays a little bit of everything, hitting genres from Americana, roots, folk, twang rock, alt-country and good ol' rock 'n' roll. On July 25, the Metropolitan Jumpin’ Jive Orchestra will take you back to the big band era, touching on works from Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman to Artie Shaw and Harry James.

Shaggy Sweet, returning to Newcastle after high demand, performs on Aug. 1. The band specializes in pop/rock music and delivers great energy as it covers everything from The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix to John Mayer and Michael Jackson. Soul Purpose, one of the top soul and classic rock bands in the Northwest, wraps up the series on Aug. 8.

A week later, Newcastle will host its Summer Movie Night on Aug. 15. Enjoy a family-friendly movie under the stars on the big screen at Lake Boren Park. The selected movie and additional details will be announced at newcastlewa.gov once it’s finalized. The city will also screen the winning videos from the Teen Film Contest that night. The movie will begin at dusk.

Last but not least, preparations are well underway for the annual Newcastle Days celebration set for Sept. 7-8 at Lake Boren Park. Old favorites such as the parade, petting zoo, pony rides and the car show will return. The beer and wine garden, featuring beverages from Newport Hills’ Resonate Brewery, is also back. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, and Newcastle resident, Alan White is the headlining performer on Sept. 8. The legendary drummer and his band will entertain with progressive rock and soulful vocals, including some of White’s memorable material with Yes and John Lennon.

The Friday night before Newcastle Days, a group led by Community Activities Commissioner Tony Ventrella is again working to organize a community musical performance. Newcastle Days organizers also hope to add some new activities this year, including an interactive photo booth, a sidewalk chalk project and fun community activities leading up to the weekend festival. Once details are finalized, the city will post additional information at newcastlewa.gov.

We hope to see you and the family at Lake Boren Park this summer!
